Review of Spark (Remington Rescue Squad #2) by Kimberly Kincaid

I’ll be honest—when I first picked up Spark, I was drawn in by the promise of flames and romance, and I wasn’t disappointed. Kimberly Kincaid has a knack for blending heart-pounding suspense with tender moments, and if you’re like me, that’s a combination that’s hard to resist. This was my first visit to Kincaid’s world, and what a fiery adventure it turned out to be!

At the heart of Spark is the intense relationship between Tyler Gates, a steadfast firefighter, and Chloe Ferguson, a strong pastry sous chef with a history that adds layers to her character. The story kicks off with Chloe thrusting herself into the dangerous world of a murder witness, and she finds herself pretty deep in the heat—quite literally—when she asks Tyler for help. What I found captivating was Kincaid’s skill in fleshing out these characters. Tyler, marked by his cynical view of love, grapples with his feelings for Chloe, his best friend’s little sister. It’s a classic trope that I adore, yet Kincaid makes it fresh through their banter and shared history.

The emotional tapestry here is woven with threads of friendship and unspoken desires. For me, Tyler’s struggle to keep Chloe at arm’s length while simultaneously being her protector really resonated. Kincaid’s vivid world-building and detailed scenes involving firefighting and crime investigation made me feel like I was right there, on the front lines, heart racing alongside the characters. That said, I wished for more of these action-packed moments earlier in the novel. It takes a while for the suspense to ignite, but once it struts onto the page, it’s exhilarating.

What I particularly loved were the moments of levity peppered throughout the narrative—the snarky banter had me chuckling, and the emotional exchanges felt genuinely intimate. Kincaid truly nails the chemistry between Tyler and Chloe, making their eventual romantic tension all the more satisfying. The pacing of their relationship, however, seemed a tad slow in parts, with some sections that lingered on the villain’s perspective feeling a bit unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

Nevertheless, Spark is a delightful blend of humor, suspense, and steamy moments that keeps readers on their toes. Kincaid has a talent for crafting relatable characters dealing with real-world issues—like Chloe’s past trauma and Tyler’s fears of vulnerability—that added depth to the narrative.

Ultimately, I’d recommend Spark to fans of romantic suspense and characters who feel like old friends. If you enjoy stories filled with tension, emotional depth, and a side of deliciously fiery romance, this book might just be the perfect spark you need. It’s an entertaining read that, while it has its pacing quirks, definitely ignites interest and leaves you wanting more.
