Book Review: For Better or Cursed (The Babysitters Coven, #2) by Kate Williams
As a fan of all things quirky and magical, I couldn’t resist diving into For Better or Cursed, the second installment of The Babysitters Coven trilogy by Kate Williams. Channeling a delightful mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Craft, and Adventures in Babysitting, I knew I was in for a wild and witchy ride. The moment I turned the first page, I was transported back to the hilarity and heart of Esme and Cassandra’s universe, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!
In this sequel, our beloved witchy besties are back in the swing of things—juggling school and babysitting duties while navigating the awkwardness of teen life. But the stakes are even higher now: Cassandra is grappling with some haunting side effects from their last adventure, including mysterious blackouts and bizarre behavior that has everyone worrying she may be cursed. As their journey unfolds, we watch them not just battle external threats but also confront personal challenges, and that’s where the heart of this story lies.
One of the standout elements for me was the introduction of the Synod Summit in their hometown. The world-building here is fantastic; witches from all over came together, teaching and learning under one roof, which allowed me to discover new layers of the Sitting world alongside Esme and Cassandra. It’s a clever device that keeps readers engaged while also expanding the narrative. I loved meeting new characters that added both humor and depth to the story. Brian, our dapper interior designer and event planner, was a particular favorite—his antics paired with his knack for style brought some much-needed flair (and chaos) to their world.
Williams’s writing is infused with humor that is both silly and relatable. The comedic situations are over-the-top—in the best possible way. I found myself laughing out loud during those hotel scenes involving a rogue chicken; pure chaos! Esme’s deadpan deliveries make her narration a joy to read, and I caught myself chuckling along at every ridiculous twist and turn. Plus, if you’re like me and enjoy audiobooks, the narrator’s performance added an extra layer of hilarity to the already funny text.
But let’s be real: this series is a fun escape from reality, complete with its minor flaws. If you enjoy spoofy humor and a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, you’ll find a home in For Better or Cursed. Even with the chaotic plot, there’s a genuine sense of friendship and growth, which made me root for Esme and Cassandra even more.
To wrap things up, if you’re looking for an enchanting escape filled with laughs, adventure, and a touch of witchcraft, I highly recommend picking up For Better or Cursed. This series is perfect for teens and adults alike who are young at heart and who delight in a good laugh. I, for one, can’t wait for the third installment to grace my shelves later this year!
